Brahma University – Mission Statement
Brahma University: Mission Statement
Preamble
Established in the enduring legacy of the Adi Brahmo Samaj and the Tatwabodhini Sabha founded by MahaAcharya Debendranath Tagore, Brahma University is a theological and philosophical institution devoted to the spiritual, ethical, and intellectual advancement of humanity. Rooted in the rationalist, monotheistic, and reformist principles of the Brahmo tradition, the University functions as an autonomous center of Hindu theological inquiry, social justice, and constitutional engagement.
Our Mission
- To provide rigorous education in theological, ethical, and philosophical disciplines derived from the Brahmo canon and ancient Indian scriptures, interpreted through the lens of reason, compassion, and social reform.
- To uphold and propagate the core tenets of Brahmo Dharma, including belief in a formless, indivisible Supreme Reality, rejection of idolatry and superstition, abolition of caste-based discrimination, and the promotion of universal brotherhood and moral living.
- To function independently of state and religious orthodoxy, in the spirit of Articles 25, 26, and 30 of the Constitution of India, maintaining full autonomy over our curriculum, appointments, and internal administration without seeking state recognition or funding.
- To preserve and advance the educational mission initiated by our spiritual founders, including the rational transcription and dissemination of Vedic knowledge, as originally undertaken by the Brahmo scholars sent to Kashi under Debendranath Tagore’s direction.
- To defend Hindus and Hindu religion, intellectually and strategically, against historical and ongoing threats of conversionism and cultural erasure, particularly from Judeo-Christian evangelical forces such as those once represented by William Carey and Rev. Charles Dall.
- To continue our historical role in movements for justice, equity, and liberation, including spiritual and institutional support for anti-colonial resistance, mass mobilizations, and constitutional struggles for ethical governance and decolonized cultural self-determination.
- To reject communalism, casteism, and authoritarianism, and to oppose all forms of state-imposed religiosity or sectarian dogma, whether in the form of colonial evangelicalism or contemporary Hindutva majoritarianism.
Our Commitments
- We do not issue degrees recognized under the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, and our theological certifications are intended solely for internal use within the Brahmo tradition.
- We do not seek or accept any financial assistance from the Government of India or its agencies, in accordance with our religious and institutional independence.
- We affirm our right, grounded in Dharma, to prepare for self-defense and just resistance, including disciplined military training and the judicious use of force when necessary to uphold truth, protect religious freedom, and prevent the erasure of indigenous Hindu traditions.
Our Vision
Brahma University envisions a society where spiritual liberty, rational thought, and ethical governance are inseparable; where education is not commodified, but spiritually and morally emancipatory; and where religious institutions are free from both ritualist tyranny and statist control.
